Lens Impression
1839年にダゲールによってダゲレオタイプカメラがフランス学士院科学アカデミーで発表されましたが、その翌年の1840年、「システム・ゴーダン」と呼ばれるカメラが作られました。
装着されたレンズはルルブール製で2枚貼り合わせの単玉、7cmx8cmのプレートに直径7cmの円形画像が得られるダゲレオタイプカメラです。
このカメラは史上初めて、当時としては驚異的な高速シャッタースピード撮影を謳ったモデルで、宣伝文では1/10秒で撮影できると記載されています。

Gaudinは3人（以上？）兄弟で、長兄からMarc Antoine Gaudin, Alexis Pierre Ignace Gaudin,
Charles Gaudinの順となります。
初期段階からルルブール(Lerebours)との共同研究を行っていたようで、その段階では化学者であった長兄のMarc Antoineが主に関与していたように思えます。
上記の高速シャッターカメラを可能としたのも、おそらくルルブールによるペッツバールレンズとMarc Antoineが発明したとされる「ゴーダン・リキュール」という現像液によるものと
考えられますが、上の写真のように走る馬車が静止して写っていることがわかります。
ただし、この現像液は毒性が強く、Marc Antoineの死因もこの液の毒によるものとも言われております。
弟のAlexisがいつ頃からレンズの製造に関与し始めたのか定かではありませんが、写真家として当初は兄とともにダゲレオタイプカメラの進化に関わり、次第に事業での役割を、
兄が研究・調査関係を、弟がビジネスの運営というようになっていったようです。彼らの事業としてはステレオ写真用のカメラと写真が有名ですが、同時にペッツバールレンズの組立て・販売を
ルルブールからのレンズ供給によって行っていたと思われ、今回の1本はこのころの製品と考えることができます。
このレンズには鏡胴表面には刻印はありません。内径部分にAG.というイニシャルと製造番号があるだけで、同様のタイプのレンズは複数確認されています。
また彼らの刻印（ホールマーク）のあるダゲレオタイプ写真も残されておりますが、米国に多いことからGaudin製造の原版が輸出されて撮影されたものと思われ、
Gaudin兄弟の幅広い事業が垣間見られます。
ホールマークの「DOUBLE」は2つの金属、すなわち銅版に銀をプレートしていることを表します。この部分には別に「BREVETE」＝特許ずみ、「GARANTIE」＝保証、などの文字が入ったようです。
左のマークはバラ、中央の三日月に挟まれたのは「神の子羊＝AGNUS DEI」とともに宗教的な意味合いがありそうです。
数字の「40」は銀の比率で全体の1/40が銀であることを示します。これ以外に20,30などの刻印もあるようです。
In 1839, Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre made a presentation at Académie des
sciences, Institut de France to introduce Daguerreotype camera system.
In the next year of 1840, one camera named ‘systeme Gaudin Camera’ was released which was also a Daguerreotype camera equipped with single doublet lens
by Lerebours making a 7cm diameter round image on a 7cm x 8cm plate.
This camera (maybe in later version?) was the first Camera which claimed fast speed photography mentioned the ability of 1/10 second speed in its advertisement.
The Gaudin’s consists of at least three brothers, Marc Antoine the eldest,
Alexis Pierre Ignace the middle, and Charles the youngest. Marc Antoine
was the chemist
who had been collaborated with Lerebours from the beginning.
I can imagine that the 1/10 sec super fast speed at that time could be
achieved only from the combination of both fast Petzval type lens by Lerebours
and so called
‘Liqueur of Gaudin’ development medium by Marc Antoine. We can find the galloping coach remain unmoved on the photo shown above.
But it is said the Liqueur of Gaudin was so poisonous to let Marc Antoine
die later year
.I am not sure when his brother Alexis joined into this collaboration, but I estimate he had been related as a photographer from the beginning, and gradually taking
separate roles as the research for Marc and the business for Alexis and
Charles.
It is known they got a good reputation in the field of Stereo Camera and
Photography, and at the same time I think they provide Petzval type lenses
to their customers
which were supplied from Lerebours.
